UC Davisが毎年開催している「Big Bang! Business Plan Competition」で「breathing screw cap」と呼ぶ新しいワインの栓が優勝しました。賞金は1万5000ドル。この次の段階としては西海岸の同じような優勝チームが5月にパロアルトに集まる「Draper Fisher Jurvetson Venture Challenge」に出場するそうです。これでトップになるとベンチャー育成の資金として25万ドルを獲得することになるとか。
"The team's design, a "breathing screw cap," has small vent holes and is fitted with a liner made of alternating layers of thin metal and a porous polymer. The liner can be customized to allow optimal oxidation for specific varietals, something that is impossible with bark corks. A patent is pending for the design."

この新しい栓はスクリューキャップと異なり，小さな空気穴によって空気の出入りが多少あるということ。これによってコルクと同様の熟成が可能になると主張しています。全く「呼吸がない」スクリューキャップで起こりがちな硫黄臭も防げるそうな。
価格は1個あたり20セントで，スクリューキャップよりは5セントほど高くなりますが，コルクとフォイルに比べると10～11セント安くて済むそうです。

果たして実際に採用するところは出てくるのでしょうか。
