温暖化の進行により，ナパやソノマなど大半のブドウ畑がプレミアム・ワインに向かなくなる恐れがあるという研究が発表されました。研究を発表したのはパーデュー大学のディッフェンボー助教授。
"The paper concludes that production in the Napa and Sonoma valleys and Santa Barbara County would essentially be eliminated by the late 21st century. The only areas in California that would remain suitable are the narrow coastal bands and the Sierra Nevada, according to the analysis."

今回のシミュレーションにはこれまで広く使われている300kmのグリッドでなく25kmのグリッドを使い，地質の影響など様々な要素を取り入れているとか。ただ，それでも作物の収穫への影響を論じるには足らないという意見もあるようです。

なお，ナパの大地主であるAndy Beckstoffer氏によると，日に当たり過ぎる悪影響を避けるために，これまで摘み取っていた不要な枝を伸ばして日陰を作るといった策も既に取られているそうです。

現在の温暖化の要因は人為的なものが多くを占めると思いますが，恐竜が闊歩した中生代のころは今よりも気温は高かったはず。それを考えれば，今ブドウが作られているところが暑すぎるようになるのも不思議ではないかも。
